INSIDE LOOK: Student Bus Safety Leader Training

Did you know we’ve got students trained to be experts on school bus safety procedures?

The more minds that know what to do during a crisis on the bus, the safer everyone can be.

That’s why officials from Dousman Transportation Company and the Darien Fire Department came out to Darien Elementary School on Thursday, Sept. 14. They spoke to our fourth and fifth grade “student bus leaders” about all types of bus safety.

The leaders are asked to help out their fellow bus riders if they can do so safely during a crisis.This is important training if there ever were an emergency where the driver couldn’t help due to injury or a medical condition.

The students learned about finding first aid kits, using the emergency exits, helping get fellow students safely off the bus and taking students to safe meeting places. Students also learned how to use the 2-way radios, the emergency brake, reflective triangles and fire extinguishers.

Darien Fire Chief Justin Schuenke came by so kids could practice the fire extinguisher with a cool electronic version where student could put out a digital fire!
