Persons over 18 years of age who are determined by a state or local public educational agency to be mentally or physically disabled and who also participate in a public or private non-profit school program during the regular school year may receive free meals as well.

The following locations will be serving the free meals this summer Turtle Creek Elementary and Delavan Darien High School.: breakfast at DDHS 7:35-7:55 and Turtle Creek 7:40-8 am, lunch 11-12:30 at both locations. The dates for Turtle Creek is June 19- July 18 and the High school June 19-August 1. Both sites will be closed on July 3-4.. Meals are provided to eligible children regardless of race, color, national origin, age, gender or disability and there will be no discrimination in the course of meal service.

Additional breakfasts will be served at 7 sites from June 12-September 1st from 9-9:45; the sites are Chestnut Ridge Apartment 419 Autumn Dr.; Town Hall Apartments 5698 Townhall Rd.; Town Square Apartment 538 Sugar Creek Rd.; Phoenix Park 111 E. Wisconsin St; and Elmhurst Apartments Elmhurst St. Delavan; also in Darien: Darien Park at 15 Park St and in Elkhorn: Elkhorn Commons at 925 Gorman St.

“This program fills a void created when school lunches are not available,” said Tina Hudy, Child Nutrition Director for Delavan Darien School District.. “Helping parents meet the nutritional needs of their children is the strength of this program.”

Petition available regarding proposed changes to school board seat composition

School Board gavel
School Board gavelDelavan-Darien Families and Residents,
The Delavan-Darien Board of Education is considering changing the current elected makeup or composition of the board seats.
Currently, the seven-member board consists of geographically-assigned seats — three from the city of Delavan; two from the town of Delavan; one who resides in the towns of Sugar Creek, Richmond, Darien or Bradford; and one from the Village of Darien or towns of Sharon or Walworth. Each board member serves a three-year term.
The board is proposing that all seven seats be “at large” without any designated residence area or requirements, other than being a resident within district boundaries. Each seat would still serve a three-year term.
CALL TO ACTION
Residents in favor of switching to this “at large” proposal may sign a petition at the School Administration Center, 324 Beloit St., Delavan, during normal business hours (7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) by to Friday, Aug. 25. The petition must be signed by at least 100 resident electors before the proposal is put to a vote of resident electors at the district’s Annual Meeting on Sept. 25, 2017.
If approved, and the board seats are made to be all “at large,” the following board positions will be up for election during the election cycles identified:
  • Spring Election, April 2018: The current City of Delavan seats (3 seats) will be elected at large without any designated attendance area;
  • Spring Election, April 2019: The current Village of Darien, Towns of Sharon and Walworth seat (1 seat), and the current Towns of Sugar Creek, Richmond, Darien and Bradford (1 seat) will be elected at large without any designated attendance area;
  • Spring Election, April 2020: The current Town of Delavan seats (2 seats) will be elected at large without any designated attendance area.
For further information or questions, contact Mike Heine, Coordinator of School/Community Relations, at 262-233-6762.

DDHS seeking AFS Host Families for 2017-18

IMAGE: AFS logo

IMAGE: AFS LogoDelavan-Darien Families:

In 1957, Delavan-Darien High School hosted its first AFS student and has hosted at least one and up to six AFS students consistently every year since.

Currently, however, there are no AFS students enrolled at Delavan-Darien high school for the 2017-18 school year.

There are still students from many countries who are eagerly awaiting news of acceptance by a host family. It could very well be YOUR family that helps a young person’s dream come true!

Host families come in all shapes and sizes: mom and dad with kids (they don’t have to be high school age), empty nesters, couples who have never had children, single parents, single adults without children, and more! You and/or your family don’t have to be perfect to host – yet you could be just the perfect host for a student who wants to broaden his/her world view.

Students will arrive in early September and depart in late June 2018. If hosting for that length of time isn’t possible or seems too long, please consider being a Welcome Family for up to 2-3 months. This provides the student to start his/her experience while local volunteers find a permanent family. Being a Welcome Family is an opportunity to witness innumerable firsts and be part of the excitement as students are exposed to new surroundings and experiences.

If you or someone you know would like to be part of a worldwide effort to work toward peace on a personal level, please check out the AFS website – afsusa.org – and click on Host a Student. After you have read through the information, scroll down and input your zip code to see what students are available in our area.

Please also feel free to contact a local volunteer:

Please help keep the tradition alive and help Delavan-Darien make the world a smaller and more peaceful place. The life you change may be your own!

Delavan-Darien Elementary Reading Specialist Kim Kirk was recognized as this year’s Werbel Award Winner for Excellent Teaching.

IMAGE: Kim Kirk

Kim Kirk

The award, given out at the district’s back-to-school convocation or fall inservice days, is named after the late Dr. and Mrs. Harold Werbel, longtime supporters of education in the Delavan-Darien community.

Staff are nominated by their peers, and winners are selected by building and district administrators. The Delavan-Darien Foundation manages and distributes the funds for the award, which includes a $500 stipend.

The award considers the following criteria:

  1. A teacher’s interest in helping his/her students in and out of class.
  2. A teacher who doesn’t stay in the same “mold” year after year; who changes his/her methods and materials to fit changes in the field; but at the same time does not go off the deep end.
  3. A teacher who tries to motivate students, to encourage them to participate as fully as possible in the classroom, as well as encouraging them to do outside work with help as needed.
  4. A teacher who LIKES young people; who LIKES to WORK with young people; who RESPECTS young people; who tries to treat them as individuals.

There were nearly a dozen elementary educators nominated this year. Kirk herself received a half-dozen nominations from fellow educators.

“This fact alone shows the dedication (Kirk) has to our students and how that dedication is recognized among her peers,” said Mike Heine, Delavan-Darien Foundation Secretary, who before presenting the award also noted some of the key words and phrases in the nomination letters describing Kirk:

  • Very professional and caring;
  • Student-centered;
  • Always interested in helping students;
  • Collaborates with teachers;
  • Always has an open door;
  • Is an active listener;
  • Helps students problem solve;
  • Researches and implements best practices;
  • Is willing to try something new;
  • Gives feedback in order to motivate students;
  • Creates games to help increase participation and motivation;
  • Strives to improve;
  • Finds ways to differentiate lessons to help each student learn;
  • Communicates and networks with others;
  • Helps fellow teachers become their best;
  • Takes time to help organize school-wide events;
  • Willing work with students during prep time or before and after school;
  • Helps students with social issues;
  • Is always very positive;
  • Speaks respectfully to students;
  • Lets students know they care;
  • Passion for student learning is unwavering;
  • Willing sing, dance or whatever it takes to let students know that learning is fun;
  • Never gives up on students;
  • Always puts students first.

Kirk has worked at multiple schools in her 20-plus years with Delavan-Darien. She is currently a Reading Specialist at Darien Elementary School.

From left: Karen Logterman, Kirsten Andreoni, Jennifer Bayerl, Bob Beighton, Mark Butzow, Tammy Fumall and (not pictured) Michelle Pelnar and Bill Reuss were recognized for 20 years of service with the Delavan-Darien School District.

Delavan-Darien staff members with 20, 25 and 30 years of service were recognized at the district’s annual back-to-school staff convocation Wednesday, Aug. 23. Staffers with 5, 10 and 15 years of service were listed at the convocation meeting, and recognized further at building team meetings with their colleagues.

20 years

The eight “Class of 1997” staffers received a comet logo blanket for their 20 years of service.

They include:

  • Kirsten Andreoni, Turtle Creek 2nd Grade Teacher
  • Jennifer Bayerl, Phoenix and DDHS Orchestra Director
  • Bob Beighton, DDHS English Teacher
  • Mark Butzow, Phoenix Band Director
  • Tammy Fumall, 7th Grade Science Teacher
  • Karen Logterman, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent
  • Chellie Pelnar, DDHS Attendance Secretary
  • Bill Reuss, Wileman Custodian

Celebrating 25 years in the district was Kari Pfeil, 2nd Grade Teacher at Turtle Creek Elementary. She received a Comet-logo wristwatch.

The two staffers who have spent three decades with Delavan-Darien Schools are Barbara Huber, Darien Elementary School Health Aide, and Barbara Perez, 6th Grade Math Teacher at Phoenix Middle School. Both received commemorative rings to celebrate their 30 years in our schools.

Superintendent Robert Crist, Ed.D., gave the following remarks about each individual:

KIRSTEN ANDREONI

Kirsten Andreoni is currently a Grade 2 teacher over at Turtle Creek Elementary School. Kirsten has been innovative and willing to try new and different methods to maximize student learning. Some examples of this have been her being both a looping teacher and a multi-grade classroom teacher in her career here with us. She has also been innovative with her classroom setup, making them warm, comfortable and inviting places to learn in for her students. She has even helped many of her colleagues design their classroom spaces as well. We’re pleased to have Kirsten and her passion for teaching in our 2 grade monolingual classrooms at Turtle Creek, and I thank her for her 20 years of service.

JENNIFER BAYERL

Jennifer Bayerl has been teaching strings and orchestra at Phoenix Middle School and Delavan-Darien High School, keeping our music programs strong and — I believe — the best in the area, if not the state. She has played an important role in helping our district get recognized three times nationally as one of the country’s best communities for music education. She has innovated in bringing together a high school symphony and has her strings students from all levels perform publicly here locally and beyond, letting many others hear how great our Delavan-Darien student musicians truly are. She is also working on becoming a Board Certified teacher and I wish her luck in that pursuit. Thank you for serving with us for 20 years.

BOB BEIGHTON

Bob Beighton has been a high-energy and fun-loving English Teacher at DDHS for two decades now, and coached high school varsity boys basketball for 19 of those years. Bob is a strong teacher-leader at DDHS and keeps his classes engaging and fun by using a variety of techniques, marked by active discussion of open-ended questions, Socratic seminars, cooperative learning and more. He also contributes to the overall fun and family culture of the high school building and is seen as a positive role model for students and staff, alike. For years, he hosted staff vs. students and alumni basketball games to raise money the MACC Fund and has used virtually each home varsity basketball game to raise funds for the cause of curing childhood cancer. Mr. Beighton, thank you for your 20 years of dedication to our schools.

MARK BUTZOW

Mark Butzow is a fantastic Middle School band instructor, teaching our sixth, seventh and eighth graders skills and techniques on all kinds of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. He leads the school’s concert band and wind ensemble, as well as marching and jazz bands, while also working with students in sectionals. Mark is also responsible for “bringing music to the parties” at Phoenix by DJ-ing such events as the talent show, reading lock-ins and Comet Code assemblies. Like Ms. Bayerl, Mark is also a huge factor in our district being recognized as a national best communities for music education award winner. Mark, thanks for helping our students make great music these past 20 years.

TAMMY FUMALL

Tammy Fumall has been a fixture and staff leader in the seventh grade wing of Phoenix Middle School for the last two decades, teaching science and social studies to our adolescent students. Always willing to go above and beyond, she was also a student council advisor and a drama/musical advisor for the school for a number of years. Tammy is an engaging teacher who not only nails teaching the academics of the subjects for which she is assigned, but she also focuses on the social needs of her students — which are MANY at the middle school level! One of her greatest strengths is in human relations, as she relates well to all students: challenging those who need it via differentiation, while also being sincere and caring to those students who need a friend facing tough times. Others have said her ability to develop relationships is unparalleled. Thank you, Tammy, for your skills in educating our middle schoolers for these past 20 years.

KAREN LOGTERMAN

Karen Logterman says her claim to fame in 20 years at the district is that she has gotten four superintendents to quit…. And she keeps asking me when I’m going to leave. In all seriousness though, as an alumna of the district and a life-long resident of the community, Karen has brought an institutional knowledge to our school system that few others could, which has helped me immensely. As my administrative assistant, Karen does so much for our district — human resources duties, state reporting, keeping our staff certifications up to date, employee handbook and district policy changes, record keeping, preparing for board meetings, taking diligent minutes and so much more. We’ve all been fortunate to have her for 20 years, and perhaps more fortunate for you all is she’ll probably outlast me here, too. Thank you for your 20 years Karen.

IMAGE: Cellie Pelnar

Cellie Pelnar

CHELLIE PELNAR

Chellie Pelnar is often the first staffer students see at DDHS when they come into the buildings, or the last staffer they see at the end of the day. Chellie diligently works as the schools attendance secretary. Her other claim to fame is that she is “the voice” of the building. In addition to making the daily attendance calls home, Chellie is calling often on the school’s PA system, reading the daily announcements, helping lead the Pledge of Allegiance and letting students know where they have to be… often times that includes reminding them that they need to be in school! In addition to her positive encouragement and attitude toward students, she is also a huge Comets fan. Chellie and goes above and beyond her required contract by helping out as a supervisor and ticket-taker at countless sporting events over the years. Chellie, thanks for your two decades of service with us.

IMAGE: Bill Reuss

Bill Reuss

BILL REUSS

Bill Reuss has been a custodial staff member in our district for 20 years, working in many of our school buildings. He is currently assigned to Wileman Elementary where we’re sure the cleanup duty might be a little different than it was in the past with there being only 4 and 5 year olds in that building. But he’s done a great job there, and in our other schools, in his time here as a Delavan-Darien staffer. In addition to building maintenance, Bill also brings to us experience in painting, drywall, electrical, plumbing and carpentry. Thanks for your 20 years of service to our schools.

25 years

KARI PFEIL

Our quarter-century staff member this year is Kari Pfeil, who came to us 25 years ago.

Kari has spent her entire professional teaching career with Delavan-Darien, coming to us in 1992, shortly after her graduation from Carroll College in Waukesha. She currently teaches 2nd grade at Turtle Creek in a monolingual classroom.

She started out though teaching 5th grade at Phoenix Middle School, before becoming a third grade teacher at the then-brand-new Turtle Creek Elementary School. She joined the ranks of the 2nd grade staff in 2000 and has taught at Turtle Creek and Wileman.

Kari has helped institute new curriculum for her classroom and her colleagues, and designs relevant and motivating lessons that engage students in their learning. She brings a firm, yet fair demeanor in the classroom and shows not only consistency, but tenacity, when she teaches. I appreciate that Kari conveys a high level of fairness, courtesy and respect toward all students, staff and parents. Congratulations on serving 25 years with us here at Delavan-Darien.

30 years

IMAGE: Barb Huber

Barb Huber

BARB HUBER

Barb Huber is  our Darien Elementary School health office aide and former classroom aide at the school.

We normally don’t allow knives in our school building, but Barb Huber is described as the “Swiss Army knife” of Darien Elementary. She’s a jack-of-all-trades and is the “utility staffer” of the building, doing anything that needs being done in a timely and professional manner. Often times she just sees the work that needs to be done and does it without being asked.

Barb is prompt, punctual and hardly ever misses a day of work. We’re sure this goes back to her days as a student at Darien School, too, and as a mom of four kids who went through the school, including her youngest, Mrs. Amber Huber-Hooverson, now a third grade teacher over at Turtle Creek.

For 30 years, Barb has been reliable, willing to help when others are in need, and willing to do just about any job that has been asked of her by staff and administration. I’m even told she’s quite handy and can fix just about anything that needs fixing in that building. And for all that, I’m thankful she’s been with us for these last three decades.

BARB PEREZ

Barb Perez came to us first in the 1986-87 school as a part-time Chapter I Migrant Program aide. I discovered this in a reference letter from about that time written by then-Superintendent, Mr. James Ticknor.

I don’t know if Mr. Ticknor ever sent the letter, or if Mrs. Perez was ever offered whatever other job she may have been seeking then, or what happened, but whatever the case is, I’m glad she stayed here with us for the last 30 years.

Barb has been a fixture in our middle school math and science departments from the 1987 school year through today. Her first performance evaluation as a teacher says, “Outstanding class for a beginning teacher.” She has been outstanding ever since, especially now as an experienced, veteran teacher.

She has grown with us. Her sheet of professional development listings is full. She may have been one of the first Phoenix teachers to use her bilingual skills in the classroom, teaching core subjects in both English and Spanish so students could understand. To this day, she provides well-structured learning environments filled with a myriad of activities and technology, designed to keep students actively engaged.

She has been a department leader at Phoenix and has mentored her colleagues throughout her career, helping them often and helping bring new curricula to the middle school. She was the district’s Werbel Award winner in 1992 and 2003, which shows her excellence has not been short-lived, but most certainly sustained. It has been an outstanding 30 years for Barb, and I want to thank her for her service with us.

Superintendent Robert Crist (left), Sr. Benefits Consultant Linda Mont from Key Benefits Concepts and District Communications Coordinator Mike Heine, show off the sponsor banner from the Run For Education 5K, which raised more than $1,500 for the district’s Imagination Library Program.

Delavan-Darien’s Imagination Library received a $1,565 boost from proceeds raised at the first-ever 5K Run for Education, held Saturday, July 29, at Borg Memorial Stadium.

The event — coordinated by the district and Key Benefits Concepts, the district’s benefits consultant — had about 60 runners for the 5K and about a dozen children participating in the 1K Run/Walk.

The proceeds will support sponsorships for the Imagination Library, a program that provides a free book by mail each month to registered children age 0-5 who live in the district boundaries. The event’s proceeds raised enough to sponsor 62 children for one year, as the cost of the sponsorships are $25 per year, per child.

Funds were raised by entry fees and these great event sponsors:

2016-17 Year In Review

Plenty to be #DDCometProud of in 2016-17!

The 2016-17 School Year did not disappoint!

We are #DDCometProud of our many highlights and accomplishments:

Dual Language grows

Delavan-Darien School District remains the only system in Walworth County to offer a true Dual Language Immersion experience in the classroom. Starting in 4-year-old kindergarten and progressing last year through third grade, students can learn Spanish and English so they become bilingual, biliterate and bicultural.

Students in this choice educational program receive instruction primarily in Spanish when starting out. Gradually, more English is spoken until it’s about a 50/50 split in the regular education classroom. English is still spoken in all specials classes (music, band, art, etc.).

The program, which expands to 4th grade this school year, will help our students become fully fluent in two languages, and be able speak, read, write and understand English and Spanish. They’ll also have an understanding of the many Spanish-speaking cultures of the world and be more employable upon high school graduation.

Fab Labs kick into high-gear

The Delavan-Darien Fab Labs kicked it into high gear in 2016-17. A new Fab Lab was opened at Phoenix Middle School and the DDHS Comet Creations Fab Lab popularity grew rapidly.

The Fab Labs are a part of a revitalized Woods, Metals and Technical Education program at DDHS and Phoenix. The areas  at both Phoenix and DDHS were revamped with the support of various grants — including state Fab Lab grants through WEDC — and community partnerships with area businesses and individuals. Equipment was upgraded, safety was improved and new programs were developed that will teach and prepare kids for the careers of tomorrow in our classrooms today.

Student interest in the available courses is thriving. Area businesses were also a part of developing and suggesting curriculum materials so we can prepare our kids for the demands of the jobs. Last year, a Fab Lab also opened up at Phoenix Middle School where students can get a jump on engineering courses. We also remain a certified Project Lead The Way school district, and offer a girls-only summer “STEAM” camp (science, technology, engineering, art and math) with the intent on getting more females involved in the tech ed program offerings.

Auto Mechanics Approved for a Comeback

During the school year, the board of education approved a plan to re-introduce an Auto Mechanics Program at DDHS, which has been absent from the curriculum for just more than a decade.

The new program will start with basic auto classes (which are all full due to high interest and student demand), and become more advanced over time. Area mechanics were a part of bringing the program back and are providing guidance for students who are preparing for careers that are currently in high demand!

Music program again seen as among nation’s best

For the third time in four years, the Delavan-Darien School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.

Delavan-Darien was among 4% of districts in the country to receive the prestigious award in 2017. Only 21 Wisconsin districts were recognized by the national organization.

The district received the award in 2016 and 2014, as well.

Phoenix out-paces nation in achievement growth

Phoenix Middle School school continues to outpace the nation when it comes to student achievement growth during the school year in the key subjects of reading and math. The learning by Phoenix Middle School students has accelerated faster than at least 9 out of every 10 students nationwide in both reading and math, data from 2016-17 national Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) tests shows. The school’s 482 students have bettered more than 90 percent of the country in growth in all middle school grades and subject areas. This is tremendous news for a school that continues to show academic improvements.

Student group leading DDHS Improvements

A new student group at DDHS called TRAIL (Teamwork, Respect, Accountability, Integrity, and Leadership) started last year to bring student-led improvements to the school. Students are working on such projects as: being greeters at the doors when students walk into the building; new athletics posters to put up with sports team schedules and encouraging attendance at events; students update a looping slideshow on the Commons TV with up-to-date school information and photos; a “birthday wall” where students who are having a birthday during the month are recognized. Students are also working together with the staff “climate committee” to find other ways to improve. One group of TRAIL students is even looking into developing an “honor wall” for DDHS alumni who have served in the U.S. military.

Comet Code Honored

All five Delavan-Darien Schools received recognition from the Wisconsin RtI Center for having strong behavior education programs. Delavan-Darien High School received a “Silver Award,” while the district’s other four schools were “Bronze Award” winners.

The program recognizes schools that focus on teaching students positive behaviors and that have quality learning environments for all students.

All five schools have been recognized in prior years for excellence in their behavior programs, and we continue improvement in this area.

Full Academic Ride for First-Generation
College Student

DDHS senior Jesus Garcia, a first-generation college student in his family, received a full academic scholarship to attend the University of Southern California.

The Trustee Scholarship is worth more than $53,000 per year for four years and is awarded to a very select group of students.

“The education I received, not only did I challenge myself with hard courses, such as honors and (Advanced Placement) courses, but my teachers always sought out to help me in any way they could,” he said. “Having DDHS be such a close, tight-knit community with the city of Delavan has made it so much easier for me to gain resources that wouldn’t be available if I was in, say, a city that was no so close and bonded like Delavan is. Delavan-Darien, I love the school.”

Sirkman chosen to attend Inauguration Experience

Then-DDHS Sophomore Lizzie Sirkman was one of 125 students from the US chosen to attend the Presidential Inauguration Leadership Summit and see the swearing in of President Trump this past January.

As part of the experience, Sirkman got to hear an unparalleled slate of speakers including Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, General Colin Powell, actor and movie producer Spike Lee, Olympic and World Cup women’s soccer champion Abby Wambach, former presidential candidates Carly Fiorina and Governor Martin O’Malley, political pundits Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson, and others.

She also got to participate in a Delegations of Change, a simulation where Summit Scholars worked together to create workable solutions to the challenges that their generation and the new presidential administration will face. And, she got to go to Inaugural Gala event at the Smithsonian Institution Museum.

NOT DONE YET

Other Highlights from the year that was!

  • More than 150 DDHS Students did a “day of service,” volunteering at 13 sites around the community.
  • Wileman Elementary School kindergarten teacher Pam Clark was Wisconsin’s winner and received 500 free books in the national Scholastic book contest.
  • Students designed pillowcases for the Walworth County Treehouse; pillowcases for children with cancer and receiving long-term hospitalization; and tie blankets for children who stay at Twin Oaks Homeless Shelter.
  • Six Phoenix students placed in the top 3 in the Southern Lakes Conference Middle School Academic Bowl, including Kate Pehkonen, Breanna Yartey, Collette Riviere, Myles Lockhart, Ezikel Rice and Melynna Arreola.
  • DDHS senior Troy Feeney was a Southern Lakes Conference Forensics Champion in Poetry. He also received third place in Poetry Interpretation at the Wisconsin Forensics Coach’s Association State Tournament.
  • Operation Click at DDHS netted two huge awards. Senior Erinn Penniman was named the program’s Student Of The Year winner and the DDHS chapter won the program’s Video Of The Year award for a video it produced. The video, about DDHS Alumna Kaitlyn Vegter’s car accident and recovery, went viral, prompting the  State Department of Transportation to produce a similar video about the dangers of distracted driving caused by technology use.
  • Destination Imagination sent four teams to the state tournament this year and one team was just a few points away from being able to attend the Global Finals.
  • DDHS had 191 graduates with 12 earning a GPA of 4.0 or above, 24 with a GPA of 3.75 or above, and 73 with a GPA of 3.0 or above. Fifty-three seniors had more than 40 hours of community service and there were 4,223 total hours of documented service work done by graduates. The class had 58 students received $153,450 in local scholarships, plus an additional $553,000 from outside sources.
