IMAGE: Clipart of figures huddled and working together.
We are pleased to announce that Turtle Creek Elementary School has been awarded a 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant beginning in the 2018-2019 school year.  Turtle Creek was a previous grant recipient over the past five years and has been successfully running a CLC (after school program) since 2013.  In February, Turtle Creek reapplied for funding in a highly competitive grant competition in order to continue and expand our current program.  Over the course of the next five years of the grant, Turtle Creek will receive a total of $650,000 to offer high quality after school academic intervention and enrichment to our students.

Although the focus of the Turtle Creek Elementary CLC is primarily literacy and math intervention, we also provide additional services to support student learning and development, including tutoring and mentoring, homework help, academic enrichment (such as hands-on science and technology programs), community service opportunities, as well as music, arts, sports, and cultural activities. In addition, the CLC offers a variety of parenting activities throughout the school year.
CLC funds primarily serve students from schools that have at least 40 percent of their students from low income families (defined as qualifying for free and reduced lunch, although other sources of objective data in addition to free and reduced lunch count may be used to establish eligibility). In addition, schools demonstrating a strong need for academic support and intervention in the areas of literacy and math receive priority for grant awards.

We are so pleased to be able to continue to offer high quality after school programming to our students for an additional five years!
A special thanks to Katie Kopp and Michelle Minton for helping write the grant and their ongoing commitment to the program.

DDSD Staff Earn WIABE Bilingual/Bicultural Educator of the Year Award 2017-2018

Image may be NSFW.

Dandelion with blue and red background

Each year the Wisconsin Association of Bilingual Education (WIABE) holds a conference to promote educational opportunities and academic excellence in the education of minority language learners in Wisconsin.

During the conference, educators from across the state had the opportunity of being recognized for the commitment in supporting WIABE’s mission of supporting and encouraging the implementation of enrichment form of bilingual education that develop age-appropriate English proficiency, while helping students maintain a sense of pride in their own cultures, language, and diversity.

Educators who demonstrate this commitment are awarded the WIABE Bilingual/Bicultural Educator of the Year Award. Delavan-Darien School District had six educators who received this prestigious award.

On April 27, during the 2017-2018 WIABE conference, the nominees were presented with their award. The educators from our district who received the award were: Helen Guerrero, Ray Paez, Jorge Inzunza, Janet Beilman, Maria Ramos-Speth and Matthew Hadlock.

These teachers demonstrate equity and excellence in the following ways:

Helen Guerrero Kindergarten Dual Language Teacher Wileman Elementary

Helen is first-rate educator. She exhibits enthusiasm in her teaching and continually seeks to share ideas with her colleagues and to create harmony among Dual Language and Monolingual education teachers. Her experience teaching in her native country of Guatemala has helped ensure that instructional time in Spanish is authentic.

Ray Paez First Grade Dual Language Teacher Turtle Creek Elementary

The phrase most often expressed when someone talks about Ray is usually one of two things, “I love Ray or love Mr. Paez-he is such a kind person.” He shows equal kindness to all he meets, no matter what their background. He demonstrates a dedication to furthering his own learning, which is a wonderful example for all students, but especially for our Latino students.

Jorge Inzunza Fourth Grade Dual Language Teacher Darien Elementary

Jorge is a wonderful example of the benefits of multilingualism. His Bachelor’s degree was done in Spanish, his Master’s in French and his PhD in Education in Portuguese. English is his fourth language. With his advanced levels of education he brings a background of experience in the field of educational research. He uses this background in the classroom by teaching students to be analytical thinkers.

Janet Beilman ESL Teacher Phoenix Middle School

Janet has been a key educator en the development of all ESL services for our minority language speakers. She not only diligently makes sure our district meets all the requirements of laws regarding minority language speakers, but she also strives to ensure that instruction is culturally inclusive.

Maria Ramos-Speth ESL Teacher DDHS

Maria is a role model and a strong pillar for our Latino Community, parents, staff, and Latino students. Students seek her out for help, support, and guidance. All who meet her can see her interest and care for the students she works with. She strives to support diversity through her participation in district sponsored multicultural events.

Matt Hadlock Bilingual Reading Specialist Darien Elementary/Phoenix Middle School

Matt continues to impress everyone. We repeatedly see how excellent he is with students as a whole group, as well as with them individually. His dedication to students is inspiring. Additionally, his stories of world travel help inspire students to pursue their dreams.

We are proud to have educators who put such a high priority on equity and excellence in their own instruction and who encourage equity among their students and colleagues.

2018-2019 10th and 11th Graders, Next year we will again have the PSAT/NMSQT Test.  This stands for Pre-SAT/National Merit Scholarship Corporation.  By taking this test you can see if you qualify for any National Merit Scholarships, your college readiness, estimated SAT score and academic strengths/weaknesses.  This a great opportunity to practice standardized tests in order to prepare for the ACT and/or SAT.

Only Juniors are eligible for the National Merit Scholarship. The test date is October 10th, 2018. The cost for the test is $16. If you are a junior on free/reduced lunch you are eligible for a fee waiver (first come first serve basis).  If you are interested in taking the test please sign up in Student Services.  No need to pay yet, I just want to see how many are interested.  The sign up will remain open until September 10th, 2018.  You may also grab a Quick Reference Guide to the PSAT in Student Services.
