Darien Elementary names Geography Bee 2017 Finalists

Darien Geography Bee FinalistsThe 10 finalists in the Darien Geography Bee were, front row from left: Yadira Cortes, Maahi Patel, Madison Stoll, Amando Gonzalez, Uyses Gomez; back row: Wyatt Barr, Adrianna Serna, Aubrey Cook, Camden Lockhart, and Christian Porras.

On Friday, January 20, 2017, Darien Elementary School held the final round of its annual National Geographic Bee. The Geography Bee at Darien begins in each 4th and 5th grade classroom in December with each student answering as many questions as they can through seven rigorous rounds. The top ten students who answer the most questions correctly are included in the Championship round.

Once students at Darien were notified about the upcoming classroom competitions, many students on their own accord obtained extra study materials such as atlases, almanacs, and even requested time to visit the National Geographic website to answer daily questions. Every year this final competition seems to get a little more competitive and exciting. It has really developed into quite a contest when you have the entire 4th and 5th grade along with parents, intensely watching these ten students battle it out over a number of difficult questions.

The ten finalists at Darien were:

4th grade – Uyses Gomez, Aubrey Cook,  Maahi Patel, Adrianna Serna, Madison Stoll, Amando Gonzalez

5th grade –  Christian Porras, Yadira Cortes, Camden Lockhart, Wyatt Barr,

At the end of competition, third place went to Christian Porras, second place to Madison Stoll, and first place to Maahi Patel. Maahi will be taking an online test and will be notified if she qualifies for the state competition.

Mr. Patrick Wrubbel, Darien fifth grade teacher was the coordinator/moderator of the Geography Bee.

According to its website, The National Geographic Bee “is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. Schools with students in grades four through eight are eligible for this entertaining and challenging test of geographic knowledge.”

Class for parents aims to keep teen drivers safe

Teen Safe Driving Class - Car KeysDelavan-Darien High School is a host site of a special class for parents of teens who are just learning to drive, or who have their learner’s permit.

The free class is titled “Enhancing Education of Parents to Keep Teens Safe on the Road,” and it is being presented by Aurora Lakeland Medical Center Injury Prevention Coordinator Saskia Lodder, RN BSN SANE-A SANE-P.

DETAILS

Aurora Lakeland Medical Center is sponsoring the program in conjunction with the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Crossroads Program, the Walworth County Adolescent Transportation Injury Prevention Committee and the Delavan-Darien High School ‘Operation Click’ Teen Driving Program.

Enhancing Education of Parents to Keep Teens Safe on the Road is science-based, and rooted in best practices in behavioral science, statistical research and educational intervention outreach.

This ‘Injury Prevention’ course is designed to educate parents about helping their teenage drivers gain experience in driving to decrease unwanted driving outcomes and increase teen driver and passenger safety. Research proves teens with involved parents are half as likely to be in a crash as teens with uninvolved parents.

Teen drivers — ages 16 to 19 — are involved in fatal car crashes at four-times the rate of adult drivers, ages 25 to 69. Over 5,000 teens die each year with a teen driver behind the wheel, and many others suffer serious injuries that require medical care and lost school and work days. These crashes are caused by multiple factors and require comprehensive solutions. Parent training is one way to help reduce roadway injuries and deaths among teen drivers.

Darien Food In A Backpack Donation

DONATIONS RECEIVED: Darien Village Administrator Rebecca LeMire and Darien Elementary Principal Kelly Pickel accept a $2,500 donation from Monroe Funeral Home Directors Pat Tauscher and Mark Monroe for the school’s Food in a Backpack program. Monroe Funeral home promised the funds as a matching grant if the school was able to raise that amount or above from community resources.

Delavan-Darien now offers a weekend meal program for students in need at all three of its elementary schools.

In January, Darien Elementary School started its own community-supported “Food in a Backpack” program with weekend meals for 20 students.

That program has already grown to three times that size following the generous support of area donors.

Monore Funeral Home Directors Pat Tauscher and Mark Monroe provided $2,500 in matching funds after the school raised $3,900 from area businesses, including:

  • $1,000 from Darien CIFA, Inc (Fire Association);
  • $1,000 from First National Bank and Trust;
  • $500 from Waddell-Wojcik, Darien;
  • $500 from the Darien Women’s Club;
  • $500 from Royal Baskets, Darien;
  • $400 from Jane Miller Diggins, Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.

The backpack program provides pre-packaged weekend meals for students, which are delivered on Friday afternoon before the students leave for home.

Students can qualify for the program if they are on the federal free and reduced lunch program.

The first weekend meal program in Delavan-Darien started in 2012 at Wileman Elementary. The school received a $50,000 grant from Live Nation after a Pearl Jam concert at Alpine Valley.

Today, the Wileman Blessings program serves about 55 students in preschool and kindergarten.

In 2015, a group of local churches, spearheaded by Sugar Creek Lutheran Church,  replicated the weekend meal program at Turtle Creek and called it “Food in a Backpack.”

There are about 120 first, second and third grade students benefitting from the program at Turtle Creek.

Combined, the generosity of the Delavan-Darien community ensures that more about 235 elementary students have full bellies over the weekend.

The program is also supported by Stinebrink’s Piggly Wiggly in Delavan. Officials at the store help order and sort the “grocery list” and prepare it for pickup by school staff.

Volunteers help out at each school to package the grocery bags for the students, which are delivered discretely by staff members to ensure confidentiality.

To learn more contact the school offices at: 262-233-6800.

Addams Family Musical logoDelavan-Darien High School’s drama students invite you to see and enjoy a fun-filled new story of the classic Addams Family.

This recently-released musical version of The Addams Family features an original story, and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before — keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

Don’t miss the chaos and fun that ensues!

Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 10 and 11, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 12, in the DDHS Auditorium, 150 Cummings St., Delavan.

Please come and enjoy the great music and energetic dance which was choreographed by Delavan’s own, Josie Palmer, and directed by Delavan-Darien Choral Director Jim Larson.
For tickets, send an email Tickets@ddschools.org. Be sure to include your name, how many tickets you’d like reserved and the show date(s) you wish to attend. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens age 65 or older. Pay by cash or check in advance at the DDHS Athletics/Activities office during school hours, or pay at the door when you arrive.
A limited number of tickets may also be available at the door prior to the event.

Come meet the family. We’ll leave the lights off for you!
