Miguel Sanson

Delavan-Darien Junior Miguel Sanson qualified for the WIAA Division 2 State Wrestling Tournament! He’ll compete in the 120-pound weight class on Thursday, Feb. 23 at the Kohl Center in Madison. Sanson, who is 27-18 on the season, will square off against Colton Nicolay of Lodi, a freshman who is 31-13. The winner will advance to take on Ellsworth senior Sawyer Strom, 36-8.

Sanson is the first DDHS wrestler to participate at state since 2014, when then-senior Cody Chelminiak represented the Comets in the Division 2 126-pound weight class.

Sanson has 10 pins on the year with three technical victories and three major victories, according to TrackWrestling.com.

For more information about the state meet, visit the WIAA website at: https://www.wiaawi.org/Sports/Wrestling.aspx

There, you can find tickets to the event and live tournament tracking brackets.

Sanson is scheduled to wrestle about 7:15 p.m. Thursday. Sanson and some of his teammates will have a drum-line escort throughout the halls of DDHS Wednesday afternoon so the student body can recognize his accomplishment! Sanson is coached by former Comets wrestler Diego Avila.

Good luck, Miguel! We’re all #DDCometProud of you!

Students taking part in shaping, improving culture of their school

DRIVEN-TRAIL-Leadership-Students

TRAIL group members who attended the DRIVEN Leadership Conference were, from left, Andrew O’Neil, Karina Torres, Beatriz Garnica (kneeling), Ryan Severson, Katelyn Rosenow and Sam Grover.

A new student leadership group is taking shape at Delavan-Darien High School with ambitious goals to change the culture within the school for the better.

The TRAIL Group, — which stands for Teamwork, Respect, Accountability, Integrity, and Leadership — is already making an impact.

The growing team of 34 students from all grade levels have already put good ideas into motion.

There are:

  • greeters at the doors when students walk into the building;
  • new athletics posters have gone up with sports team schedules, encouraging attendance at events;
  • students update a looping slideshow on the Commons TV with up-to-date school information and photos;
  • there’s a “birthday wall” where students who are having a birthday during the month are recognized;
  • a group of students is looking into creating an “honor wall” for alumni who have served in the U.S. military;
  • students are working together with the staff “climate committee” to find other ways to improve.

“We can’t make all these changes happen with out the kids wanting them,” said Principal Jim Karedes. “They are coming forward with great ideas and we’re listening. We’re just getting started. We’re not even to 5 percent of what this group is going to become. When it really takes off, we’re going to see more attendance at dances, at our sporting games. We’ll have a better all around school atmosphere. It’s exciting stuff.”

Members of the TRAIL have attended three leadership conferences since the start of the school year to help them sharpen their skills and get ideas for climate improvements.

The conferences included one with other Southern Lakes Conference schools at Burlingtion High School, a seminar at Carroll University in Waukesha and the “DRIVEN” conference at UW-Whitewater.

“Eventually, we want every student to be in TRAIL,” Karedes said. “If you’re a student and you want to bring about positive change, we want you to be a part of it.”

Technology Night 2017 was Giga Successful!

Video and Photo Gallery below

Technology Night 2017 at Delavan-Darien High School was, by all accounts a smash hit! A homerun! It was outstanding! Those were just some of the comments we’ve heard.

Check out this review by Superintendent Robert Crist, Ed.D., who attended and visited the many stations and demonstrations set up by students of all ages and grade levels:

WOW! What a wonderful display of some of the technology used, by students and staff, in our district last night!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved the explanations by the students. They were very proud of what they were demonstrating, at every station. I am really excited that our one-to-one technology is working as we anticipated. The efforts by all of our staff to enhance student interest and learning is phenomenal!

Thank you for all of your efforts to incorporate technology with our curriculum. It really generates student interest and enhances learning, in all areas! Keep up your fine efforts! Those who missed last night really lost-out on some really fine examples of what our students and teachers have been doing!
With utmost respect,
Bob
Delavan-Darien High School technical education teacher Mike Fellin had this to say:

I was awe struck by the creative abilities of all who were displaying what they had made; even more so by the pride that poured out when they talked to those watching. DDSD Shown Bright Last Night!!!!!

District Director of Instruction Deb Erdmann was equally impressed:

What a fantastic Digital Learning Day event last night. There were so many working parts and you were an integral part of the process. I talked to a parent last night who told me the demonstrations were very impressive. I watched student greeters welcome the community and give out maps.  The Tech Crew did a great job in getting power and Chromebooks to the stations. Mr. John Pickel (custodian) set up the building so everyone knew where their spot was.  Students and staff manned our concession stand.
Thank you to the support from building and district administration. One student told me how fun it was to show something to her principal.  Teachers brought technology, as well as visual aids and other activities to make their stations engaging. You had prepared your students well and it showed.
And our students were incredible – articulate and excited about what they are learning in the classrooms. Some were conversational and some had formal presentations. All of it was so impressive to our visitors.
Thanks to all of you. It was a great event because of you. It was an honor to be among you last night.

Kindergarten Coders show off their coding skills

Delavan-Darien kindergarten students show they know how to code using Bee Bots and Code-A-Pillars. They demonstrated their skills at Delavan-Darien’s Technology Night 2017. These students in the video are from the district’s Dual Language Education program, and speak both Spanish and English in the classroom.

Bee-Bots are exciting new robots designed for use by young children. These colorful, easy-to-operate, and friendly little robots are a perfect tool for teaching sequencing, estimation, problem-solving, and just having fun!

Code-a-pillar inspires little learners to be big thinkers by encouraging preschoolers to arrange (and rearrange) the easy-to-connect segments in endless combinations, sending Code-a-pillar on his path. This learning toy encourages experimentation while developing important skills like problem solving, planning & sequencing and critical thinking. There’s no end to the combinations and codes kids can make using these two educational coding toys!
