An opera and the Old West.

Those two worlds collided at Turtle Creek Elementary School on Thursday, March 2, as the Madison-based performance company Opera For the Young presented The Elixir of Love opera for all the school’s students.

The performance featured four professional opera singers and actors and a professional piano player. The cast was supported by supported by Darien Elementary School fourth and fifth grade singers in the district’s Elementary Honors Choir.

PHOTO GALLERY

Opera for the Young brings live, professional opera to elementary school audiences. Each year, OFTY reaches over 75,000 elementary school children throughout the Midwest to ignite an enthusiasm for opera. All productions are fully staged, sung in English and adapted especially for kids. This year’s performance also included a little bit of Spanish as Turtle Creek is home to the county’s only Dual Language Education program.

Opera for the Young’s adaptation of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love moves the action to Lonesome Gulch, a town in the American Old West. Miss Addy, cowboy Jimmy Reno, and U.S. Army Sergeant Bill Corey form the love triangle of the story, with Dr. Dulcamara appearing as the “snake oil” peddler who sells the love potion (which is actually just root beer).

Students in the honor choir had bit-parts as a soldier and as a justice of the peace, and were also the singing “citizens of Lonesome Gulch,” the scene of the opera.

The Elixir of Love’s playful melodies and comical characters delight youngsters, while thematic points concerning coming of age, facing the trials and tribulations of life, and learning to forgive generate thoughtful discussion.

The performance at Turtle Creek was made possible through the financial support of the Delavan-Darien Friends of the Visual and Performing Arts.

Phoenix MS Continues Outpacing Most of Nation in Achievement Growth

MAP Test Scores Achievement Growth better than 90% of nation in all categories.

PhoenixMapScores2017A Delavan-Darien school continues to outpace the nation when it comes to student achievement growth during the school year in the key subjects of reading and math.

The learning by Phoenix Middle School students has accelerated faster than at least 9 out of every 10 students nationwide in both reading and math, data from 2016-17 national Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) tests shows.

The school’s 482 students have bettered more than 90 percent of the country in growth in all middle school grades and subject areas. This is tremendous news for a school that continues to show improvements.

“We aren’t as proficient as we’d like to be as far as overall achievement, but our students’ incredible growth in knowledge and abilities is quickly closing the achievement gaps,” Phoenix Middle School Principal Hank Schmelz said. “We are growing our reading and math skills at pace that’s much faster than most other schools grow throughout the course of a year.”

The national MAP tests were given in September and February, and Schmelz said he is pleased with the progress made by all students.

Principal Hank Schmelz

Principal Hank Schmelz

“We’re closing the achievement gaps at a rate that is faster than expected,” Schmelz said. “Usual goals are to see one year’s growth during one school year. We’re behind in achievement, so our goal is to get more than a year’s growth in a year’s time. We’ve done that. We’re catching up, and I’m proud of our students and staff for the work they have done. It’s quite an accomplishment.”

Schmelz said it shows the  tactics and methodologies Phoenix teachers bring to the classroom are working. The key, he says, has been a focus on reading and literacy in all grades and in all subjects.

“All of our Phoenix teachers are reading teachers. We do close reading exercises in physical education, health, art, everywhere,” Schmelz said. “We’re never going to catch up and get to where we need to be if we only had the English teachers doing that.”

Staff have bought into the idea of everyone being a reading teacher and it shows across all grade levels. Last year, MAP growth scores at Phoenix were in the 90th percentile or above in three of the six testing categories (6th, 7th and 8th grade reading and math). This year, all six areas were in the 90th percentile or above, with four categories at or above the 95th percentile.

Phoenix teachers use consistent instructional strategies across all grades and subjects. By doing so, students are able to better understand them and the concepts being taught because they are familiar with them, Schmelz said.

The next step is to bring the school’s achievement scores above national and state averages.

“We’re excited about our growth, no doubt, but we’re not done improving yet,” he said. “I expect we’ll continue to see strong student growth and soon enough, our achievement levels are going to get where we want them to be, which is at least to the national average, and hopefully beyond.”

The rules to attend the party are simple… Don’t have any major or minor school rules violations and you’re invited!

So was the case for many Darien Elementary School students on Friday, March 3.

The school held a popcorn and socializing party for students who avoided disciplinary-related trips to the office (major violations) and similar talks with their teachers (minor).

The students came to celebrate in pairs of classrooms and Superintendent Robert Crist and Director of Instruction Deb Erdmann were on hand to congratulate the many students for their positive behaviors.

“You’re all faced with choices to make every day,” Superintendent Crist told the students. “Sometimes, those choices are difficult or unpopular, but it’s important to always make the right choice.

The students in today’s photo gallery have proven time and time again that they can make the right choices day in and day out! Congratulations fourth and fifth graders, on following the Comet Code all the time! #DDCometProud

Dual Language first graders at Turtle Creek have been busy studying what it takes to be a “Healthy Me!”

The kids learned how to take care of themselves, their body, their systems, their mind. They capped off the 6 weeks of learning with some special visitors.

The got a visit from Ms. Brenda San Jose, who is a professional dancer and former teacher at Turtle Creek. She explained how to dance carefully, and what things she does to be healthy as an athlete.

Associate Principal Mr. Brian Incitti talked to the students about how important family time is and to take care of yourself and family members by doing activities that you love together. He showed off some of his medals he won while racing.
District nurse Jaqueline Belken-Pecor visited to teach students about how germs act in our bodies and how we can fight them to stay healthy. The students also did an experiment with water, pepper and soap to see how the soap eliminates germs.
DDHS Alumna Alison Pickel, aCertified Dental Assistant (CDA) at Madison Pediatric Dental & Orthodontics, talked to first graders about the importance of having health teeth and gums. She noted that students should be brushing twice per day and gave a list of foods that are good for prompting healthy teeth.
As a group of students, there was also a competition among the classes to see which students could eat the most health snacks over a four-week period. Mr. Inzunza’s class won the prize package consisting of a very cool diploma and an extra recess. Also, every student in Mr. Inzunza’s class received a free day pass for their parents to go Delavan’s Anytime Fitness, which sponsored the challenge.
