The Southern Lakes Conference Academic Bowl was held recently at Elkhorn High School.

The competition consists of two phases.  The first phase consists of a multiple choice test.  Each student takes a 40 questions multiple choice test from one of four different content areas: science, math, english, and social studies. Five students took a test from each content area.

The second phase is known as the oral response competition.  From our 20 participants, five teams of four were created.  Each team was pitted against similar teams from the other seven schools in the conference. They were brought on stage in the auditorium and asked to answer multiple choice questions by committee. The five oral response teams each competed in different content areas: science, math, english, social studies and current events.

The DDHS team performed admirably and advisor Nick Marsh said he is #DDCometProud of or our students’ efforts.

“They represented our school well,” he said. “They conducted themselves with all the tenants of the Comet Code and we should all be very proud of them.”

Garcia nabs huge scholarship to USC

Jesus Garcia

Senior Jesus Garcia shows his Hollywood Walk of Fame keychain on his USC lanyard in the DDHS Commons.

If you’re a college-bound, soon-to-be Delavan-Darien High School graduate, there’s probably no better news to receive than what Jesus Garcia found in his email mailbox yesterday.

He was awarded the University of Southern California Trustee Scholarship, a full-tuition award worth $53,440 for the 2017-18 academic year. The scholarship is renewable for eight semesters, provided Garcia makes satisfactory progress toward his degree and upholds USC’s standards for conduct and academic integrity.

“You are part of a very select group of students chosen for this award,” reads a letter he received from the university’s admissions office.

“He is absolutely a great kid, and a great student. Jesus is  very deserving of this award and I am incredibly proud of his accomplishments,” said DDHS Principal Jim Karedes, one of the first at DDHS to find out about the award.

As a recipient, Garcia is eligible to other perks, such as applying for housing in the McCarthy Honors College in the new USC Village. He also will receive personalized academic and scholarship advising by USC Academic Honors and Fellowships, and can join the Trojan Scholar Society, an exclusive student organization that programs academic, social and cultural events for the personal and professional development of the university’s top students.

What was it like when he saw the message from USC?

“Boom, I blew up,” Garcia said, noting he was anxious in waiting about a month for a response. “I told my dad (Jesus Sr.). I was screaming it to his face. I showed him the screen of the computer and he was just gazing at it, taking it all in. He was speechless. I told my mom (Maria) and she gave me a hug. She started tearing up. I loved it.”

Garcia is a first-generation college student in his family. His parents never were educated past high school, he said.

“Getting accepted into such a prestigious university, along with a full-tuition scholarship, is not only an accomplishment to myself, but it’s also a big accomplishment to my parents and my whole family,” Garcia said.

Garcia said he worked hard to put together the “perfect essay” on the application and to get his grades up to where they needed to be for the school to consider accepting him (USC accepts only 16.5 percent of all applicants). He took the ACT test three times until he scored high enough where he was satisfied he could make it into USC and have a shot at the scholarship. He was also very active in school sports, extra-curricular activities and community service, which he said gave his application a huge boost.

He credits his teachers and the course offerings and extra-curricular offerings with his success, as well as a supportive community.

“The education I received, not only did I challenge myself with hard courses, such as honors and (Advanced Placement) courses, but my teachers always sought out to help me in any way they could,” he said. “Having DDHS be such a close, tight-knit community with the city of Delavan has made it so much easier for me to gain resources that wouldn’t be available if I was in, say, a city that was no so close and bonded like Delavan is. Delavan-Darien, I love the school.”

Garcia plans to double-major in acting and cinematic arts, despite having only started acting in his junior year of high school. He loved performing (breakdancing at school dances and at pep rallies, especially), but only got into acting at the urging of a close friend, he said. Once on the stage, he was hooked.

“I’m a novice, no doubt about it, but I’m ready to embark on something huge,” Garcia said. “Overall, my biggest goal is to become a successful actor. I’m not talking like, ‘I’ve seen him here or there.’ I’m talking about blockbuster movies. I want my own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

He chose USC because it’s one of the top theater and cinematography schools in the country, and Hollywood and major movie studios are just minutes from campus.

He even bought a replica Hollywood Walk of Fame star keychain with his name on it while visiting there during his junior year. It’s a motivator he’s not shy of talking about.

“I have it on keychain as a reminder as to what my overall goal is,” he said. “Whenever i see it, it reminds me to keep striving, to keep grinding, to one day achieve my dreams.”

Moving west to a La La Land will be a big switch for a young man who grew up in the the small, close-knit community of Delavan but, “at this point, getting accepted into USC and receiving such a prestigious scholarship, anything is possible. I’m ready for it.”

With confidence, we can say yes, he is ready for it, and so much more. Congratulations Jesus! #DDCometProud!

Jesus Garcia USC Congratulations

DDHS Junior makes it her mission to save lives

MiKayla Person to hold CPR and AED training from Noon-3:30 on April 8.

MiKayla Person

MiKayla Person

Delavan-Darien High School junior MiKayla Person isn’t holding a party for her upcoming 17th birthday. Instead, she’s spreading awareness about Project ADAM and potentially saving lives!

Person was born with a congenital heart defect called Pulmonary Valve Atresia. She also had a Ventricular Septal Defect, which means she was missing a crucial valve that took blood to her lungs to be oxygenated and then back to the heart.

“In between the chambers of my heart I had a small hole, which mixed blood that had been oxygenated and blood that hadn’t,” she said. “All of this means that I was running on an extremely low amount of oxygen until my condition was found. Now, after four surgeries, and numerous trips to the hospital, I am as heart healthy as they come.”

After her final surgery in April 2013, Person joined forces with with the non-profit Project ADAM, which works works to acquire and implement Automatic External Defibrillation devices (AEDs) for schools, and teaches CPR within schools and communities.

“I have worked with Project ADAM for a little over 4 years, and have loved every moment of it,” Person said. “I have worked my way up to being co-chair of the youth advocacy program where I am able to teach at many different events and train new youth advocates.”

On April 10th, Person will be celebrating her 17th birthday. This year, instead of having a big party, she will be holding an event to train the community in CPR and AED use.

She is holding her open house-style training at Delavan Christian School, 838 Oak St., Delavan, from noon until 3:30 p.m., Saturday, April 8. There will be food, training, and fun activities for all ages.

The public is invited to attend, including young children. She has trained individuals ages 3 years old all the way up to 70!

Way to go, MiKayla! #DDCometProud of your accomplishments and dedication to such a worthwhile cause!

About ProjectADAM

Project ADAM is a national, non-profit organization committed to saving lives through advocacy, education, preparedness and collaboration to prevent sudden cardiac death. Focused prevention training and education ensures schools and communities are not only equipped, but trained in prevention of sudden cardiac death.

Project ADAM began in 1999 after the death of Adam Lemel, a 17-year-old Whitefish Bay, WI, high school student who collapsed and died while playing basketball. Adam suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), in which ventricular fibrillation occurred, a condition in which the ventricles cannot pump blood into the body. Defibrillation, or an AED, could have saved his life.

Adam’s parents, Patty Lemel-Clanton and Joe Lemel, collaborated with Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin’s Herma Heart Center to create this program in Adam’s memory.

ALERT: 2017 Road Construction on Highway 50

Delavan-Darien Parents:

The City of Delavan Public Works Department Director Mark Wendorf sent us this message regarding road construction on Highway 50. The construction will occur in front of Wileman Elementary School later this spring. We are advising parents so they are aware should it cause delays with school drop-offs or pick-ups.

Subject:  Highway 50 Project Status Report

On March 22nd the contracting firm of Buteyn-Peterson — hired by the Wisconsin D.O.T. for the rehabilitation of Highway 50 within the City of Delavan — presented their proposed work schedule and construction staging plan.

This project can be generally described as three contracts-in-one, with the major work being the widening and reconstruction of Geneva Street from Park Avenue (by Wileman Elementary School) east to the median area between Shopko and Tractor Supply, along with the widening and reconstruction of Borg Road and Wright Street from Phoenix Street north to the driveway into Slumberland. This main construction work area will be done “under traffic” with one lane in each direction for through highway traffic being maintained at all times. There will be median “islands” installed in this entire project area, with left turn bays for most existing commercial driveways. The Geneva/Wright/Borg junction will be rebuilt as a fully signalized intersection, but will feature with two eastbound straight lanes and two southbound left-turn lanes to relieve traffic delays. Work on this reconstruction area is planned to begin April 10th and extend to November 1st.

The second work area is the repaving of Geneva Street from Park Avenue west to Wisconsin Street. Replacement of the water mains under this roadway segment will require closing the highway to through traffic, with a highway detour using Wright Street to connect Highways 11 and 50. While the portion of Seventh Street is closed, the Wisconsin & Southern railroad company has scheduled their replacement of the rail crossing and installation of traffic gates. This second work area and the Highway 50 detour is planned to begin April 24th and finish by July 17th. The railroad company is also planning to replace the Wright Street rail crossing, sometime later in the year, after the detour is removed.

The third work area will be along the north side of Geneva Street for the construction of a concrete walkway connecting Wright Street to the existing walkway on the east side of the Interstate Freeway. Construction of this walkway construction will require installation of a large retaining wall for the Interstate underpass, which will require some construction closures of the northernmost westbound traffic lane.

The map below was created using data from the City of Delavan Public Works Department. It shows an approximation of the work zones and descriptions of each part of the project as provided by the City of Delavan.
