2017 Write-In Board Candidate Bios

ELECTION DAY: Tuesday, April 4, 7 a.m. – 8 p.m.

election-day buttonThe School District of Delavan-Darien Board of Education has two “Town of Delavan” seats open for election this spring. Incumbents Dr. Chad Kort and Steve Logterman are not seeking re-election.

There were no candidates who came forward in time to have their names listed on the ballots.

However, there are four registered “write-in” candidates. Their biographical information and answers to some questions are found below. Click their names to review their information.

School Board members are elected to three year terms.

These school board candidate biographies are provided for informational purposes and do not constitute an endorsement of any candidate.

Susan Alness

Name: Susan Alness

2030 Deer Run

Delavan, WI  53115

Candidate’s Bio

My name is Susan Alness and I’m running for a position on the Delavan Darien School Board. I have lived in Delavan for 12 years and have two children. My husband, Rob is a pilot for American Airlines and we left the suburbs of Chicago to give our children a better quality of life in a smaller town. I gave up my job after 14 years with American Airlines to raise my children and have been actively involved in their schools and community ever since. I currently work in the Pre-School classroom at Williams Bay Elementary School. Previously I worked in the district at Turtle Creek Elementary School in the office. I also ran my own business for a few years so I could manage my time as needed to work around the kids’ school and activities.  I have served as a PTO Board Member, Delavan Lake Improvement Association Board Member, and am active with my church. Good citizenship, serving my community  and advocating for children are very important to me. I am prepared to work with the school board to develop and implement important common goals to make Delavan Darien School District the backbone of our community.

Candidate’s connection to the Delavan-Darien School District:

I worked for the Delavan-Darien School District for five years in the office at Turtle Creek Elementary School.

Why are you seeking the position of Delavan-Darien School Board Member?

I am prepared to work along side our school board team to achieve the goals of the community, administrators, and board. I have no hidden agenda, no particular interest to promote. I would just enjoy the opportunity to serve and would take the responsibility seriously. I am interested in working with the school board team and administrators toward enhancing Delavan-Darien Schools. Serving provides a unique opportunity to make a real difference in my community not only for students now in school, but also for many others who will follow.

If elected, what do you hope to see happen during your time on the board?

If elected to the Board, I would hope that I never stopped reading and asking questions to fill in the gaps of the fundamentals that will have been required to be an effective contributor.  I believe we all want the policies we enacted to support each student in performing to the best of his or her ability. It will have been important to not only listen to all of our stakeholders and to share our successes with them, but also to help them better understand the challenges. I want us to have all worked together  to generate creative ideas to address problems that seemed difficult or impossible to solve. I hope for the reduction of open enrollment requests and improvements to the overall financial position of the district. Nothing will have been more satisfying than knowing we welcomed students into an environment committed to their success, and that we ushered students on to the next chapter of their lives with a solid foundation and to thrive in the pursuit of their dreams.

What are the biggest issues you see facing the Delavan-Darien School District today and how can they be solved?

It’s always difficult to list a limited number of most important issues when so many topics deserve attention. I believe that one of the most immediate issues facing the district is fiscal challenges. Declining enrollment places further pressures on the budget. Fiscal challenges should not distract us from achieving our academic goals; we must find ways to partner with the community to educate our children.

Ron Deschner

Name: Ron Deschner

3338 North Shore Drive

Delavan, WI 53115

Candidate’s Bio

One daughter Carri, who is a Special Education teacher.  Serve four years service in the Air Force.  Graduate of University of Wisconsin- Stout.  Former technical college and high school teacher. Candidate’s connection to the Delavan-Darien School District:

Born and raised in Delavan and graduate of DDHS.  Taught Industrial Education at Delavan-Darien HS.  Organized and chaired the Technology Advisory Committee.  Currently active in the Technology and Advisory Committee as well as the Academic and Career Planning Committee.  Daughter also a graduate of DDHS.

Why are you seeking the position of Delavan-Darien School Board Member?

Would like to continue to and advance the Delavan Schools in providing the best educational opportunities for all students as they prepare to enter the world of work and become productive members of the community.

If elected, what do you hope to see happen during your time on the board?

To continue with  school district and community cooperation  to make our educational system the best possible in servicing our students, parents, teachers and administration.

What are the biggest issues you see facing the Delavan-Darien School District today and how can they be solved?

Continue to provide the best educational program for our students by employing and maintaining quality educators and administration, keeping our facilities updated and maintained, as well as securing the necessary funding to support this effort.

Kevin Hermann

Name: Kevin Hermann

6543 Hwy 11

Delavan Wi 53115

Candidate’s Bio

Born and raised in Delavan  attended Park School, Wileman, Phoenix, DDHS and Winona University. I was in football and track in high school.  I own and operate Treasure Hut flowers, a family-owned and operated business in Delavan for 50 years.  I pride myself with having myself and business help the community anyway we can.   Some of my hobbies include woodworking, large display work and collecting movie memorabilia. I donate to many of the community fundraisers and auctions for local organizations. We have also been asked by the Agriculture Teacher at DDHS to come help inform the class on learning about flowers and interiorscape plants, which we love to do. I truly loved growing up in this community and my memories in our school district truly warms my heart.   I want to see this passed onto future generations!

Candidate’s connection to the Delavan-Darien School District:

Connections to the school district besides attending myself and living in the community my whole life would be my son, who will be attending within two years at DDHS. Many of my peers and friends have children in the district.

Why are you seeking the position of Delavan-Darien School Board Member?

To help build the reputation of the school district and look for ways to try to build enrollment back up. I think my contribution among others on the board combined can really help the community make some informed and smart decisions for our children.

If elected, what do you hope to see happen during your time on the board?

One of my main items I’d like to see taken care of is more classes for kids to learn trades  (vocational type classes). I find it unfortunate that parents have to take their children to other schools in other communities  because they feel our schools cannot teach them or feel it isn’t a safe environment. We need to find ways to change people’s minds in the community.  I have talked to many teachers and employees in the schools that have shown great support and love for our schools… we need to show this and inform and educate the community on what we’re about.

What are the biggest issues you see facing the Delavan-Darien School District today and how can they be solved?

Main issues I see with the school is the decrease in student enrollment. Would like to work on ways to bring interest back to our school and not to lose students to different districts the school is the lifeblood of a community strong schools are important to bring in new residents and keep the community strong!!!!!

Giovanna Moses

Name: Giovanna Moses

2144 Deer Run

Delavan, WI 53115

Candidate’s Bio

My name is Giovanna Moses. I live in the Town of Delavan and have lived here since 2009 with my husband and family. I grew up in Delavan and graduated from DDHS. I work as an optometrist in Delavan and have three children, which keep me fairly busy. I also enjoy the volunteer work I do with my church, serving in a multitude of ways, but I particularly enjoy teaching religious education to the third year high school students. My family and I enjoy other avenues of service throughout the year in raising awareness about childhood cancer, Down syndrome individuals and their unique gifts, and the importance of blood donation. My parents and mother-in-law live in Delavan, as well. My brother and sister and their families all still live in the area, too. I delight in spending time with family and friends.

Candidate’s connection to the Delavan-Darien School District:

As a parent of three children, my days are often spent talking about education, helping with homework and planning for the future. My oldest will be a freshman at DDHS in the fall. It has been an exciting few months trying to learn how to be a parent of a high school student. I have been talking with other parents who have been there. I am learning how to maneuver through the district webpages and find out what information I need and how to help my student be prepared for this next academic adventure. It is important to me that my children take advantage of the educational opportunities available to them. I would like to make it easier for all parents to recognize what role they can play and how they can best direct their students to make good choices and be academically successful.

Why are you seeking the position of Delavan-Darien School Board Member?

I am interested in running for the Delavan-Darien District School Board because I believe in public education.  With a good education, we can see good students become good citizens and good citizens make a good community.  I would like to live here for a long time and I would like to trust my future to the students we are teaching today.  I recognize that one school board member does not work alone, and I believe as a team this school board has a lot of heart.  I would like to be a part of all that they are doing.

If elected, what do you hope to see happen during your time on the board?

It is important to me that we encourage students to become the best that they can be with teachers who have the training and tools to be effective educators. I would like this great education to happen in safe environments, both structurally and emotionally. I believe the School Board has an incredible responsibility in working with the district leadership to ensure the success of our students, and I would very much like to be a part of it.

What are the biggest issues you see facing the Delavan-Darien School District today and how can they be solved?

One of the biggest issues facing the Delavan-Darien School District today is having enough funding to make all of the educational, fine art and athletic dreams come true. This district has a very passionate and proud group of citizens, and it is admirable that we all want what is best for the students. It is important to recognize that things have to be prioritized, and that teamwork among Board Members is imperative. I would be happy to be a member of a Board that helps execute some decisions that provide needed resources for the educators, coaches and students. Another issue facing the Delavan-Darien School District is that of School Choice. I would like families in this district to feel confident that keeping their children enrolled in our schools will provide their students with stellar educations, unique opportunities, and positive experiences that allow for the students to better themselves, both academically and in job preparedness.

Phoenix career fair leading students on Pathways to Success

What an amazing day at Phoenix Middle School preparing young students for the future!

Phoenix Career Fair Photo Gallery

CLICK PIC FOR MORE CAREER DAY PHOTOS IN OUR GALLERY!

The school hosted a career fair today (March 29) and had about two-dozen career and post-secondary educational options available for all sixth, seventh and eighth graders to explore! Check out our video for details of this AMAZING learning event! It’s another example of Delavan-Darien Schools creating #PathwaysToSuccess!

“When we set up the career fair we wanted to open it up to everyone,” said Steve Gross, school counselor and career fair organizer. “Kind of our vision here at Phoenix about the career fair is this: it’s walking into this amazing building with doors of opportunity. Those doors might lead to a skilled trade. It might lead to a four-year university.”

It could also lead to students exploring entrepreneurship and starting their own business some day. The possibilities are endless, and it’s important to get students started thinking about their college and career planning early.

SEE OUR CAREER DAY PHOTO GALLERY

The career fair allowed all middle school students to learn about the different careers, the trades, and continuing educational options available to them after high school graduation. It will help them, “get ready to transition outside of high school,” Gross said. “A lot of the (student) reaction has been amazing. They’ve wanted to learn about the EMTs, the firefighters, the government law offices, the skilled trades. So a lot of our kids have came here today wanting to get more information about what possibilities they have for them. A lot of the people that are in attendance today have been absolutely blown away by the engagement by our 6th, 7th and 8th graders asking these questions of ‘I want to have that career. What can I do? How can I be you?’”

The career fair showed them the way! #DDCometProud

A school-wide send-off for Mr. Blanke

For nearly 40 years, Delavan-Darien Custodian Ken Blanke has kept the classrooms, hallways and grounds of both Darien Elementary and Turtle Creek Elementary pristine and looking good so teachers could teach, and students could learn.

He retired recently, and on a day he thought he was coming back just to pick-up some personal effects, was treated instead to a surprise school-wide sendoff at Turtle Creek.

PHOTO GALLERY

Darien Principal Kelly Pickel, who worked with Blanke for about 20 years, talked about all the things that made him special and appreciated in the district. A group of teachers also read stanzas of a poem about custodians Blanke kept framed on the wall of his office all these years.

Blanke said he’ll keep busy doing housework and managing the Lauderdale Lakes Boat Patrol, where he is administrator of the department. He’s also an avid football and NASCAR fan and will spend more time with his grandchildren and new great-grandchild.

We’ll miss you, Mr. Blanke! Thanks for your many years of dedicated, professional and quality service to our schools, our community and our children! #DDCometProud

DDHS students are making music in AP Music Theory

Music notes
IMAGE: Jim Larson

Jim Larson

DDHS Choral Director Jim Larson has his Advanced Placement Music Theory students not only studying music, but making it themselves.

Using the online composition software program Noteflight, students are writing compositions and learning about “form” in music.

The assignment begins with constructing a three- to five-note motif, or “a repeated idea.” Then, through several composition techniques — including sequencing, augmentation, and retrograde — the motif is expanded into a full musical phrase.

The process is repeated for the second phrase and finally section “A” has been composed.

The final product is developed into a “rondo form” composition. Rondo form is a piece of music where the musical material stated at the beginning of the piece keeps returning. This opening music can be called either the theme or the refrain. Between the statements of the theme, or refrain, there are episodes. An episode is musical material that is different from the theme.

The students’ compositions follow an ABACABA coda (A is the theme, and B & C are episodes), so this process of making the three- to five-note motifs must be done several more times.

Students first wrote the piece for a string quartet, learning about string instruments along the way. It was then transcribed for a brass quartet, where students had to learn about the brass family of instruments.

Below are several examples of student work:

Four-Piece String Quartet, by Jesus Garcia

Brass Quartet, by Ricky Karbash

String Quartet, by Quinn Gibson

On Monday, April 3, Delavan-Darien High School students in Deicy Jaramillo’s Native Spanish Speakers 2 class had the opportunity attend a college class and get a little “taste” of the college experience, figuratively and literally.

The students — who all speak Spanish as a first language and English as a second language — visited UW-Madison and had the opportunity to sit in and participate in an Italian language class. Students learned Italian numbers, days of the week, and names of many foods.

PHOTO GALLERY

Then students had a real taste of traditional Venezuelan food at La Taguara, a Madison restaurant that specializes in Venezuelan and Latin American cuisine. Students tried Arepas and Empanadas. Arepas are a type of food made of ground maize dough or cooked flour, and filled with a choice of chicken, beef or cheese. This is is eaten daily in Venezuela and Colombia with a special sauce that is tangy and sweet. An Empanada is a stuffed, fried bread that may consist of meat, cheese or other ingredients with a tangy sauce. These are two very popular foods eaten daily in Venezuela and other Latin American countries.

Lastly, students visited Wisconsin’s state capitol, which was a first-time experience for several students. The class had a self-guided tour through the state’s capitol building, where lawmakers were busy working on the state’s next biennial budget.

It was definitely a day filled with much culture, learning, and fun!
