Superintendent Letter Regarding First Week and Tuesday’s Late Buses

schoolbusturtlecreekDear Delavan-Darien Elementary Families,

We’ve made it through our first week of school.

Thus far, for the most part, it has been a great week. I’ve been to all of our school buildings multiple times and the children are getting more comfortable each day in their surroundings. The students are, by in large, showing their excitement, their smiles and their dedication to learn. I’m happy about that and hope you are, too.

Despite all of this, not all things have gone as planned. I want to apologize for the transportation delays we had on the first day of school and the inconveniences they may have caused you.

However, part of the delay was beyond our control and the delays were magnified by it being the first day of school.

Our buses transport elementary and middle school/high school students separately. When the middle school/high school routes were taking students home, one student had a medical emergency while on the bus. An ambulance was called.

When we were notified of the medical emergency, we made an all-call to parents, as soon as possible. These calls, while quick, do take time to process and dial all the numbers in our database. Unfortunately, some of you may have already been gone and were not able to receive the message.

The ill student’s health and well-being take precedence over everything else and we put that student’s needs first. Because the student needed medical transport, the bus they were on was delayed in finishing its drop-off route.

It was therefore delayed getting to Darien Elementary where it was to pick up and shuttle students to Turtle Creek Elementary. Students at Turtle Creek stayed inside Turtle Creek, which is air-conditioned, until the Darien buses arrived at 4:18 pm. All of the buses left at 4:50 pm

Because we account for all elementary children and ensure they are on the correct bus at both schools, none of the buses could leave on time. We had to get all Darien students on the correct buses before they could depart, and the buses waiting at Turtle Creek could not leave until those Darien shuttle buses arrived. At Turtle Creek, students again had to be verified as being on the correct buses, too.

The loading process here — and everywhere — take longer in the first few days as students have to learn routines and procedures, and staff and bus drivers have to learn names to verify children are in the correct places.

It was a ripple effect on Tuesday that backed everything up. It’s unfortunate it happened, but I’d much rather our staff and drivers take the time to make sure children are safe. I never want to hear of students getting on the wrong bus or being dropped off at the wrong stop.

I anticipate loading/bus transfer times becoming much faster as we all get acclimated to the process. Most routes will last about 30 minutes, with some riders having a route that lasts about 50 minutes maximum (due to distance from our schools and/or students being shuttled from Darien Elementary). This first week, we’ve already made some adjustments and seen improvements in efficiency in both the morning and afternoon bus routes.

As an aid to assist in your planning, I collaborated with our transportation company regarding drop-off times for each stop in the afternoon. The best way to calculate that is to determine how long it would take you to drive from your child’s school (from the end of the school day) to the drop-off location AND add 15-20 minutes. The total would be, approximately, the time the bus would arrive at each stop.

Please keep in mind that the 15-20 minutes is for loading each bus, and the bus stopping at various stops, before it arrives at your child’s stop.

Because Tuesday’s situation was caused by something beyond our control, I feel there is no blame for the delays toward Dousman Transportation, nor our staff, many of whom stayed until all of the students were home.

Again, I apologize for the inconvenience it may have caused you. Please know that I am reviewing our plans with Dousman Transportation to try and avoid delays like this should we have another medical or other type of emergency during our routes. We try to treat each child as if they were our own and always put what is in their best interests first.

Respectfully,

Robert Crist, Ed.D., Superintendent

Respetuosamente,

Robert Crist, Ed.D.
Superintendente

About Delavan-Darien’s Scholarship Program

The Delavan-Darien School District Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization established to raise funds for the School District of Delavan-Darien, its students, teachers, staff and facilities. The Foundation is governed by a nine-member board of directors who approve all expenditures, grants and scholarships awarded by the Foundation. Each director is elected on a three-year term and can serve no more than three consecutive terms.

In 2016, 38 of the school’s top 45 academically-ranked graduating students (through seven semesters) all got at least one local scholarship award.

The Delavan-Darien Foundation awarded $72,400 in scholarships to 48 students.

The total local scholarship amount from 132 area scholarship providers — including awards managed by the Delavan-Darien School District Scholarship Foundation — was $144,350, going to 65 total students.

Including nearly $541,000 in other awards and grants from outside the area, graduates were awarded $685,250 for their continuing educations (local and non-local scholarships).

Dress Code
The following are the guidelines that staff members at Phoenix School follow when enforcing the school dress code:
• Shorts and skirts should come to the student’s fingertips or lower when their arms are down to their side.
• Students can not wear spaghetti-strap or thin strapped tank tops, halter tops, one shoulder tops, or tube tops. Shirts should not be cut below the armpit in the front, side, or back. All tank tops must have straps that are at least two fingers wide. Shirts must cover the student’s midriff and not show any part of their stomach.
• Clothing that contains inappropriate or offensive language or pictures including drug and/or alcohol references and weapons will not be allowed.
• Anything that can be considered distracting to learning including gang-related colors, bandanas, loud or distracting clothing will not be allowed.
School administration will have the final say in this matter. If a student is found to be wearing something that is not deemed school appropriate, the staff member will ask the student to go to the office. They will be asked to “remedy” the dress code issue. If the student refuses to change their clothing or cover up clothing, the parent/guardian will be contacted and the student will be sent home suspended for that day.

Greg Boris, a Wisconsin-born actor and director, visited DDHS on Saturday (Sept. 17) to give a free clinic to current and future DDHS thespians. He spoke to and worked with the school’s Thespian Society members and Vocal Music Director Jim Larson.

Boris graduated from UW-Milwaukee and the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, which is a perennial top five school in the nation for musical theater.

Greg has since been on staff with the Missoula Children’s Theater (MCT) as a tour performer, composer, director, music director, house performer, sound designer and special projects manager. He developed and directs the MCT summer musical theater camp “Next Step Prep.”

He worked with students, giving them tips to improve their singing, acting and stage presence.

Here’s what studentMadlyn Santeler thought about the experience:

Last Saturday Greg Boris came to the school and helped us with singing, acting, and auditions.  The first thing we did was to learn  the difference between supported  and unsupported singing.  Singing happy birthday in different types of voices, Greg helped us  feel and hear the difference between a high, bright, and childish voice, and a rich/deep woman’s voice.  One of the activities was playing catch with a partner using a tennis ball.  After several attempts trying to get everything right (the stance, the arm movement, the hand position, the timing, etc.) we repeated the activity trying to count the number of time the name brand “Wilson” rotated as the ball was thrown to us. Most people caught the ball more often due to the lack of overthinking the process. This idea is the main philosophy in the book “The Inner Game of Music.” Something that Greg said that stood out to me is, “Acting is portraying a believable character in an imaginary situation.”  I thought that he was a genius.  Separating into two groups; one group sat in the school’s auditorium as auditors (judges), while the other group went outside of the auditorium to practice what we would say at an “auditions.”  Once we knew what we were going to say we headed on stage, one by one, and did our auditions. Under the direction of Greg, the auditors chose which of us they would call back based on a character type that the were looking for such as: quirky best friend or nerdy superhero. Finally, Greg helped us with monologue and song preparation.

Fab Lab Invention Partnership

Fab Lab students team up with local inventor

watertableDelavan-Darien High School technology education students are using the school’s new Fab Lab to help a local inventor improve his design for a “water table.”

Williams Bay inventor Bob Kleber developed and produced a prototype design that lets him bar-b-que literally “on the water” while his boat is anchored nearby.

His creation features a stainless steel table top, long PVC pipe for a stand, and an auger that allows it to drill into the lake bottom for support. Another PVC pipe holds an umbrella for shade and provides added stability.

The design allows for water to pass by it easily without creating much rocking. The table is suitable for a small grill, or for placing food and drinks on it.

Mike Fellin

Mike Fellin

While it’s functional, Kleber said he sees room for improvements before mass producing it and taking it to market. That’s why he came to the DDHS Fab Lab, to see if the Engineering Design and Development students could help him out.

Kleber and the class, taught by Mike Fellin, examined the prototype and talked about some possible design improvements and desires:

  • Could it be made lighter yet still be durable?
  • Could it be made easier to transport and stow away?
  • Could it be made for use not only in shallow water, but also on land or in a boat?
  • Could the table hold items more securely, such as drinks and utensils?

This is the first such partnership between the DDHS Fab Lab, its students and an inventive member of the public. Students last year worked with an area business to design and create labels for machines at a local factory.

“This is exactly what we had envisioned when we were developing the Fab Lab,” Fellin said. “Our goal from the start was to connect citizens and businesses with our students and the new Fab Lab so they would work together on developing and improving ideas and projects. This is a perfect one to start with, and I think the kids are going to come up with some great ideas.”

Kleber said he would use his prototype while boating on Geneva Lake. When Kleber started having other boaters come over and ask him about where he got it and how to get one, he thought there might be a market for the table. But not before it wasn’t improved, hopefully by DDHS students.

If a design is perfected to the point where it could be mass produced, DDHS may also help Kleber market it via the new Exploring Entrepreneurship course. But that would be further down the road.

“After we see the first development, we’ll take it from there and see how far we go with it,” Kleber said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what progress they can come up with here. I’m very excited. Their young minds are going to come up with a great product here, and it’s going to be a big help for me because I’m kind of stuck right now.”

So, if you are out on a lake next summer and you see someone with a bar-b-que grill set up “on the water,” know that DDHS students probably had a hand in creating a local entrepreneur’s invention.

DDHS adds entrepreneurship college credit option for juniors and seniors

Students in the Exploring Entrepreneurship course will use the new Comet Creations FAB Lab at DDHS for part of their work.

Students in the Exploring Entrepreneurship course will use the new Comet Creations FAB Lab at DDHS for part of their work.

DELAVAN — Delavan-Darien High School now offers college credit from the University of Iowa through its new Exploring Entrepreneurship course.

Kristine Slawson

Kristine Slawson

Business education teacher Kristine Slawson completed the university’s BizInnovator Teacher Certification program and can teach this college credit-bearing course to juniors and seniors starting this school year.

In the class, students will explore and assess their entrepreneurial attitudes and ability, learn how to assess business competition and create a business plan. Students will learn from entrepreneurs, who will speak in class and offer advice on how students might complete their semester-long business plan project. The class will also use the school’s new Comet Creations FAB Lab for various course projects.

Students must score a 70 percent or higher on a comprehensive exam taken at the end of the course to receive the three credits from the University of Iowa. Those credits may be transferred to other post-secondary institutions.

The Exploring Entrepreneurship course is an introduction to entrepreneurship, including identifying characteristics of the entrepreneur, evaluating opportunities, engaging in customer discovery, design thinking, feasibility, financing and planning for success.

The course is ideal for students who have a passion to pave new paths, create new things or solve problems. Exploring Entrepreneurship provides students with the framework to apply these interests to the world of business. They use the BizInnovator.com curriculum as the foundation for the course work.

The course was developed at the Jacobson Institute for Youth Entrepreneurship at the University of Iowa. The online curriculum enables educators to teach the entrepreneurial mindset, encouraging creativity, innovation, critical thinking and problem solving. It also prepares students for success in their chosen field.

Another priority for the course is to boost student interest and achievement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) courses. The U.S. Department of Commerce estimates that jobs in these areas will grow 17 percent by 2018, nearly double the growth for non-STEM fields. There may be as many as 1.2 million unfilled STEM jobs because of a lack of qualified workers, the department estimates.
