Dress Code
The following are the guidelines that staff members at Phoenix School follow when enforcing the school dress code:
• Shorts and skirts should come to the student’s fingertips or lower when their arms are down to their side.
• Students can not wear spaghetti-strap or thin strapped tank tops, halter tops, one shoulder tops, or tube tops. Shirts should not be cut below the armpit in the front, side, or back. All tank tops must have straps that are at least two fingers wide. Shirts must cover the student’s midriff and not show any part of their stomach.
• Clothing that contains inappropriate or offensive language or pictures including drug and/or alcohol references and weapons will not be allowed.
• Anything that can be considered distracting to learning including gang-related colors, bandanas, loud or distracting clothing will not be allowed.
School administration will have the final say in this matter. If a student is found to be wearing something that is not deemed school appropriate, the staff member will ask the student to go to the office. They will be asked to “remedy” the dress code issue. If the student refuses to change their clothing or cover up clothing, the parent/guardian will be contacted and the student will be sent home suspended for that day.

noplaceforhate3DELAVAN — Delavan-Darien High School is hosting a leading anti-bullying school assembly that features some of the top X-Games athletes this Friday, Sept. 23.

One out of every four high school students has reported being bullied during the school year. ASA Entertainment, the country’s leading action sports event producer, is taking action to prevent bullying and increase awareness of its effects by visiting 100 high schools in 20 cities across America with an entertaining, educational and impactful action sports assembly program.

noplaceforhateAlong with Delavan-Darien High School, the ASA High School Tour is visiting the Milwaukee area for performances at Waukesha North High School, Nathan Hale High School, Milwaukee Lutheran High School, and Fort Atkinson High School.

The program brings five top skateboarding, BMX and inline skating pros to high school campuses to perform incredible stunts on a specially designed 12-foot high mobile half pipe ramp while educating the students about bullying prevention and how to be an ally to victims of bullying. These shows present a rare opportunity for students to interact with these elite-level athletes in a one-on-one setting.

The combination of an action-packed performance by top X-Games pros, paired with the bullying prevention message, captivates students in a unique way and helps them retain the important facts. The goals of the ASA High School Tour are to increase awareness of the realities of bullying in high schools and share a preventative and positive message for change with students.

The list of pros scheduled to appear on the U.S. Tour includes Trevor Meyer (St. Park, MN), Mykel Larrin (Racine, WI), Coco Zurita (Santiago, Chile), Steve McCann (Melbourne, AUS), Jimmy Walker (Chicago, IL), Zack Warden (St. Louis, MO), Colton Satterfield (Salt Lake City, UT), Paul-Luc Ronchetti (Norfolk, UK), Josh Stafford (San Diego, CA), Nolan Munroe (Rindge, NH), Mat Olson (Phoenix, AZ), and Eito Yasutoko (Kobe, Japan).

2016 will mark the 17th year that ASA Entertainment has produced the Tour, visiting over 1,500 schools and reaching 3 million students. Through the support of its backers, which includes the U.S. Marine Corps, the Anti- Defamation League and ASA Entertainment, the Tour’s events are provided to schools free of charge.

“The ASA High School Tour is probably the most rewarding program we produce,” said ASA Entertainment CEO, Rick Bratman. “The ASA staff, the action sports pros and the sponsors whole-heartedly support the Tour’s cause and message. When kids come up to us and say they decided to help a classmate avoid a difficult situation through an act of kindness because of our program, it is exceptionally gratifying.”

This Cuban singer, who passed away in 2003, was well known for her salsa music and is known as a Latin American icon. (There is a clue near the keyboarding classroom!)

INFO RE: GENERAL LOCK AND HOLD: DDHS had a “General Lock and Hold” situation today (September 22, 2016) for an ill student in the hallway. We call a “General Lock and Hold” for any medical situations in our school buildings to ensure an ill individual receives the care and attention her or she needs without interruption and to try and provide privacy for the ill person. The City of Delavan Police Department received several calls about this afternoon’s situation so we wanted to provide the information here to clear up any rumors that may be swirling in our community.

This Cuban singer, who passed away in 2003, was well known for her salsa music and is known as a Latin American icon. (There is a clue near the keyboarding classroom!)

Delavan-Darien High School technology education students were a among the 115,000-plus visitors to the International Manufacturing Technology Show 2016 in Chicago in mid September.

Students were able to attend courtesy of our Fab Lab partners at Precision Plus, Inc., in Elkhorn. The show, Precision Plus says, was great reminder that the workforce of tomorrow has to keep up with the rapid advancements in technology, and our youth needs to be inspired today.

Precision Plus was an active participant, sponsoring three coach buses filled with students, teachers, and several of the company’s team members that Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of the show.

“I cannot imagine any better opportunity to showcase the state of today’s manufacturing than to tour the IMTS floor,” said Precision Plus President Mike Reader, a DDHS Class of 1982 graduate. “One really needs to experience it to grasp the grand scale of the show.”

Here are a few facts to provide perspective on the enormous scale of the event:

  • 1,370,256 square feet of exhibit space. Yes – that is 1.37 million square feet!
  • 2,407 exhibiting companies from all over the world
  • 76 million pounds of materials moved into McCormick Place
  • Equipment and tooling worth nearly $1 billion!

Reader said attendees at the show were very optimistic about business prospects going forward. He also noted that manufacturing is key to our country’s economic growth and prosperity.

“Technological advancements, like those seen at IMTS 2016, are changing the industry at an increasingly rapid pace,” Reader said. “Moving forward, we need to open our doors to students so that they may see the beauty in what manufacturing careers can offer them. Creating through the application of technology and problem solving is what builds value, and ultimately wealth. The importance of manufacturing to our nation’s economic wellbeing is evident. Make a difference and get involved. Be a proactive force in creating opportunity for the next generation of manufacturers.”

Delavan-Darien School District is thankful to for the opportunity provided by Precision Plus to have students attend such an important event.  The company has also provided financial and equipment support, as well as advice, for making our DDHS and Phoenix Middle School Fab Labs successful. The Technology Education program at DDHS has grown fro 260 students three years ago to about 450 students today!

Also, October is Manufacturing Month. It’s important to let our community’s youth know that a career in manufacturing is a rewarding and well-paying one. To learn more about Wisconsin Manufacturing Month, visit https://www.wmc.org/programs/manufacturing-month/.

Second graders in Ms. Guerrero’s Dual Language Immersion class had an “explosively” good time in science class today.

It was Volcano Experiment Day! Prior to the eruptions, the second graders did their own research in groups using their Chromebooks, and presented different options on how to make the volcanoes erupt to the rest of the class. Each group then created their own volcano, named it, and did the experiment.

After the experiment, they discussed the results and recorded them in their learning log, comparing their volcano’s eruption with that of a real volcano!

Wisconsin School Board Appreciation Week set for Oct. 2-8

wi_school_board_appreciation_weekDELAVAN — The Wisconsin Association of School Boards has set Oct. 2-8 as Wisconsin School Board Appreciation Week as a time to build awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education plays in our communities. Delavan-Darien School District is joining all public school districts across the state to celebrate Wisconsin School Board Appreciation Week to honor local board members for their commitment to Delavan-Darien and its children.

“It takes strong schools to build a strong community, and these men and women devote countless hours to making sure our schools are helping every child learn at a higher level,” said Superintendent Robert Crist, Ed.D. “They make the tough decisions every month and spend many hours studying education issues and regulations in order to provide the kind of accountability our citizens expect.”

Crist said the key work of school boards is to raise student achievement by:

  • Creating a vision for what the community wants the school district to be and for making student achievement the top priority;
  • Establishing standards for what students will be expected to learn and be able to do;
  • Ensuring progress is measured to be sure the district’s goals are achieved and students are learning at expected levels;
  • Being accountable for their decisions and actions by continually tracking and reporting results;
  • Creating a safe, orderly climate where students can learn and teachers can teach;
  • Forming partnerships with others in the community to solve common problems; and
  • Focusing attention on the need for continuous improvement by questioning, refining and revising issues related to student achievement.

“School board members give Delavan-Darien’s citizens a voice in education decision making. Even though we make a special effort to show our appreciation in October, their contribution is a year-round commitment.”

The Delavan-Darien Board of Education members serving our district and their years of service are as follows:

  • Jeff Scherer, President (9 years)
  • Steve Logterman, Vice President (nearly 5 years)
  • Roxann Kelton, Secretary (4.5 years)
  • Sharon Gonzalez, Treasurer (4.5 years)
  • John Andreoni (1.5 years)
  • Chad Kort (4.5 years)
  • David Reinhart (0.5 years)

To further recognize the school board, the school district has asked the Delavan City Council, Delavan Town Board and Darien Village Board to read a resolution that salutes the work of the seven-member school board and proclaims Oct. 2-8 as Wisconsin School Board Appreciation Week.
